Dhanbad, known for its illegal coal mining and the "Gangs of Wasseypur" is a happening town in terms of crime and money. several coal syndicates run here whose turnover can cross more than 200 crores per year. Here we have coal Czars who are so exhorbitantly rich that they are ever in fear of raids and their black money geting seized. Some employ 20-30 gunmen for self protection who themselves are involved in illegal coal trade. In a both hilarious and alarming incident a team of CBI and Vigilance officials of B.C.C.L (coal extraction and supplying PSU) ran helter-skelter for cover from firing by these gunmen. The team was in "Shimli pahal" an area in Jharia, Dhanbad. they had gone for physical verification of a road built by a local contractor. The CBI team's experience was horrifying and members were ex-pressingly frightened. Some people were heard saying "if this is the condition of CBI and police one can expect the fear of mafia experienced by common people". It is said that the contractor has links to higher reaching chain.
